The Month of March has been......... Crazy, comes to mind!......
This fourth grade class has mastered the art of flexibility this month! They worked hard (even griping about it) on the state tests, and really wanted to do well. That was after having 4 days off in 2 weeks between the wind storm and snow storm weeks prior! That Tuesday of test day, each child had a special note from me, written on their desk for motivation and for them to remember this test does not measure their personalities I have had the pleasure getting to know so well this year. Some parents chose to write an encouraging letter and the kids really enjoyed those all week. Our trip to Foodlink was a great success. The kids easily took on the responsibilities Randy, asked us to do. They worked so well together and impressed all the teachers that attended with them. The kids even asked if they could do it again! Peter Pan was also a great hit, and many of the kids want to attend the performance this weekend. The BK students even got a chance to chat with some of the Saint Kateri Students after their performance. Check out some of the pictures below :)

It is getting busy but here are a few updates for you:
Religion- We completed a unit with Role Models and what those look like and how Jesus was the ultimate role model for us. We are moving into the Beatitudes and what those mean in depth. SS- The kids started an At-Home Project. They chose Loyalist or Patriot at random and began brainstorming a poster creation that would have been published in a newspaper. Some research should be done at home with moms and dads to provide good reasons to join the side chosen. This is a great time to enrich what has been talked about at school with the symbols and reasons for their poster. It is due on February 15. Math- We are in Module 4, over half way learning about angles and measurements. We are beginning to talk a little about Geometry and some vocabulary surrounding it. Science- We are into our Energy unit, talking about different types of energy and how they change. Reading- We are still reading Shiloh in cooperative and guided groups. The fourth graders really enjoy this book and some of the real life issues that surround this story. There is an informational meeting requested for parents in fourth grade on February 13 at 7:00 PM. Sr. Kay is asking that if you cannot attend to please make her aware! Students kicked off this week with School choice scarves and practicing the school choice song. We are honoring moms and dads for choosing our education at SKS!!
Tuesday is our fundraiser at Bill Grays starting at 4:00 PM Wednesday is Silly Hat day and Prayer Partner day. Thursday is the day we celebrate the sisters and brothers where we are making Valentine's Day cards for numerous people in the community. Friday we will end our week with the school choice dance! It is a dress down day Friday- your favorite team colors! Stay tuned for pictures! I hope the children enjoyed their break and many have come back rested and ready to go! We have much planned for the month of January.
Here is just a sneek peek of what we have been working on: New Year's Resolutions and Religion: Students each have an academic goal stated on their desk they are working towards, daily or weekly. They really have embraced this concept and working hard to "become a better person". Science: We are getting into energy lessons. Heat, Sound, Mechanical, and Light Energy are just to name a few. SS: The students are beginning the American Revolution Unit. They are really interested in the battles and weapons used back then and how our country has come to be! Math: We are continuing to measure angles and shapes as part of unit 3. ELA: The students are working on Word study words twice a week and a new book called "Shiloh". They will be working on for the month of January, vocabulary words and what words mean. The class is really good about giving examples and is now working on actual meanings. Here is a sneek peek of what is to come: Catholic Schools Week at the end of January The Snowball Dance Research on the battles of the American Revolution The judgements and collaborative learning in life experiences with the story "Shiloh" The kids worked really hard this week. We have done a lot of reading and writing!
Here is a glimpse at some of the stuff completed this week! Social Studies: We are looking at colonists jobs and how important they were for the colonies. We are going to begin comparing and contrasting them to jobs now-a-days. Science: The students did a "station" final assessment. They had a matching quiz to match up electricity and magnetism terms to the correct examples and had hands-on stations including building a circuit and finding out what conducts electricity and what does not. Religion: We finished our Saint research projects, including topic sentences and illustrations. They are hanging on the bulletin board outside of the classroom. Math: We also finished our final Topic 2 assessment! (Like I said, they've been working hard!) Measurement and data and conversions they are beginning to understand! Those word problems get tricky but they are really putting effort into their work and using tape diagrams. ELA: We working on close reading this week, and learned about new inventions that changed history. We started Literature circles, which are similar to book clubs but the kids read with each other. They really enjoyed socializing with each other with the inventions! Welcome back from a hopefully, rested and enjoyable Thanksgiving!
Our fourth graders discussed many different things we were thankful for, during the weeks preparing for Thanksgiving! Another look in fourth grade: SS- Long house projects came in today and they looked wonderful! The children were so proud of their projects, we took a big portion of the morning presenting and admiring them. Check out the Pictures! ELA- We are actually doing a few different things. We are currently putting together a Saint Research writing report. We are summarizing interesting details we find and practicing "synthesizing" those facts into one general statement. It is a process this week to "generalize" information from that research! We are also continuing working on Closely Reading with non-fiction articles including Earthquakes, plate techtonics, tsunamis and more! Science- We are finishing up the unit with Magnets. We will be doing a summative assessment including writing and hands on activities with Electricity and Magnets. Math- Module 2 is on measurement and data. The kids will be finishing up metric next week. This week has been busy for us, however, very rewarding.
Today was a beautiful Veteran's Day Service and it was amazing to see the support from our students, staff, parents, grandparents and community members. We are proud of all our family members that have served and continue to serve! Another big topic of discussion this week was the election. The kids were thrilled to be talking about it in class. We even voted on SS Weekly so our vote counted! The questions and comments about the election were awesome!! Here are some other things going on in the world of Grade 4: Religion- We are talking about and relating the 10 Commandments to our individual lives. Social Studies- We have been talking about the first explorers of New York State (Verranzo, Cartier, Champlain and Henry Hudson). They have looked at maps to see the paths they have sailed and why they found NYS in the first place! Science- We are in full swing of our Circuit unit. The children love the hands on activities with the batteries and trying to find new closed circuits. Math- Our Unit Test is coming up next week on Module 1. It is on rounding, subtraction and addition word problems. ELA- We continue to read The Sign of the Beaver and work on our writing. Our big focus is providing an answer including details. It is easy for us to list answers and come up with them, but we are focusing on providing proof from what we read to support our answers. We will continue to work on that in our New York State Progress Book and with other reading resources. The class is finishing up the first quarter!
Halloween in the beginning of the week made us all tired and restless this week! We still managed to get through! Here are some things we worked on this week: Reading- We did more work with Adjectives and Adverbs. We read a couple more chapters in The Sign of the Beaver. We also wrapped up unit 1 in our New York State Progress Books SS- We began our unit on Colonial America and the Explorers who first set foot here in NYS. The kids should be working on their longhouses at home! Those projects are due on 11.30 Science- Kids are in the middle of their electricity unit! We will be finishing up our activities and experiments on those and moving into magnets since they tie so closely together! Math- Unit 1 is coming to an end and their unit test is coming shortly! God Bless! |
